Beam is a free iPhone app for time-limited beams from local businesses, and bars are one of its seven categories. When a bar near you starts a happy hour or a drink special on Beam, it appears in the app with a countdown and the distance to walk. You claim it in one tap and show the code at the bar.

How it works

  1. Open Beam. You see the beams live within walking distance, closest and soonest to end at the top. Filter to Bars if that is all you want.
  2. Claim the one you want. Claiming is free and holds the beam for you for a set time, often an hour, with a countdown on screen.
  3. Show the code at the bar. Staff scan the QR code on your screen or type the six characters under it.
  4. Pay the bar the price on the beam, the way you normally would. Beam never charges you.

Live beams, not listed hours

A happy hour directory lists the hours a bar says it runs a happy hour. Beam shows beams a bar has switched on right now, with the minutes left, because the bar posts each one itself when it wants people through the door. A quiet Tuesday can get a better beam than a busy Friday.

What it costs

Nothing. There is no subscription, no fee to claim and no card to enter. Bars pay Beam to reach people nearby; you just show up.
